Piano Optimization
Myth: A piano is working at its full potential when it is new. In fact... Many pianos are not "set up" well when they come from the manufacturer. They have been built to a certain spec, but not set up for optimum playing. It takes voicing and regulating to have the piano playing its best. The same issues apply to most used pianos. They are underperforming for the pianists who play on them. There is so much more your piano can offer! Too often pianists settle for the piano they've got. They think that in order to get a better piano they have to buy a different piano. But that's not necessarily the case. Usually, there is immense untapped potential in the piano they're already playing. Something often overlooked is how a piano feels to play. This is a significant part of the satisfaction, finesse and experience of playing. We've also heard: "Well the piano is good enough for the kids' lessons". Maybe not. The piano may actually be hindering their musical development. It can slow them down or frustrate them. Or worse, it can prevent them from becoming a sensitive and expressive musician. Kind of like shoes that don't fit, or a racquet strung too tightly, or dull skates. Better sounds, better feelings After piano tunings, the best and most efficient steps that can be taken to optimize a piano's feel include regulating and voicing. Most concert halls are very familiar with regulating and voicing. Not many piano teachers, students or even amateur performers are. But what a difference this can make! Gaining maximum consistency across all keys, having the best possible attack speed, escapement and consistent after touch – if you don't know what you've been missing, then you don't know what you're missing! New parts before new piano? (aka Pimp my ride) Sometimes an upgrade is in order. But again, very often a decent piano can become a really good one, and a good piano can become a great piano with some better parts. Hammers and shanks play a huge part in both the feel and sound of a piano. So do the strings. Often they become dull and unsatisfying. But once replaced, the piano sings.
