Dr. Kendall Hafermehl RPT, MA, DWS
Musician Technician
Not all piano technicians are musicians. Kendall is, and this deeply informs his work. He progressed quickly from an early age, and as a senior piano student studied at the Alberta Conservatory with Thelma Johannes O’Neill. He has taught piano, served as a church musician and college instructor, and has been a piano technician since 1986. Kendall’s post-secondary studies include graduate and doctoral degrees.
A Registered Piano Technician (RPT), Kendall has prepared and maintained instruments for many of the world’s greatest pianists. His clientele includes teaching studios, concert halls, schools, conservatories, colleges and churches. He is a sessional teacher at the annual International Piano Technicians Guild Conference, and leads workshops with teachers across Alberta and BC.
His more recent pursuits include licensing in WNG composite (carbon fibre) high performance actions, and a rare apprenticeship in restorative conservation where he restored a mid-19th century Broadwood, the make of piano played by Beethoven. This past year Kendall completed advanced studies in key weight metrology, making him one of the two licensed installers for Precision TouchDesign in Canada.
You may have seen the Hafermehl Mobile service on one of our rebuilding adventures throughout the Kootenays. Kendall will be teaching classes this summer in Washington, DC on our unique approach to providing Artistic and Technical Excellence Anywhere, which has gained growing interest among the international technician community.
